What’s a Witch to Do? tells the story of Mona McGregor, a 35 years-old woman who is the guardian of her two nieces, the oldest sister of a bride and the owner of shop. She might sound too ordinary but Mona is also a witch and the High Priestess of her coven. Her life isn’t going according to plan but she manages to live it well and accepted it. She’s completely in love with Goodnight’s new doctor and hasn’t been in a relationship for years.
Things are going normal until one fateful night. Adam Blue, the Beta werewolf of a pack, appears at her doorstep wounded and almost dead. Mona takes care of him and soon finds out that there is a plot against her: someone is trying to kill her. Against her brave judgement Adam remains by her side and together they start digging the truth to see who’s behind that murderous plot.
This supernatural book with a taste of mystery was a pure delight to me. As soon as I started it, it was hard to put it down. Mona’s character was so human and so ordinary, I could relate myself to her and feel some compassion towards all her problems. Her love and devotions for her nieces, her worries about her friends and coven made her character seem real and reliable, something that some books sometimes lack. And then, when Adam appeared in her life, she found herself in a rollercoaster of emotions. It was hard not to like Mona and Adam together – their relation grew (even though a bit fast for me) and trust changed into friendship which then evolved into love. I found myself wishing for her to ditch the doctor and be with Adam.
Adam was a funny character. As every werewolf we’re all used to, he’s big, hot and passionate. Despite never having said the words, I already knew his feelings towards Mona and his reasons for protecting her. Plus, his affection to the girls had me by my heart. He was warm, tender and caring and it was difficult not to flinch when Mona screamed with him.
The mystery in this book was very well developed. I admit not having a clue about who was behind Mona’s death plot and when the pieces of puzzle got together, I gasped ‘cause I wasn’t expecting that. The conspiracy unfolded through the book, some clues here others there but nothing too straightforward. And when you thought you had the right person, something would happen and you would find yourself back at the beginning. I only realised who the person against Mona was around the same time as she did. Then, looking back at the book, there was not a solid clue that would say “It’s her”!
This book is perfect for someone who wishes to read a light mystery novel with a supernatural twist in it. Jennifer Harlow wrote an enjoyable, entertaining and amusing book which I’m looking forward to continue exploring. She used the paranormal world we know – vampires, witches, demons, werewolves – and created a world that makes you smile, angry, upset, sad, excited and eager for more.
