Bout of Books 14 {Wrap-Up}

Bout of Books
Participant 41 ~ Leonor (Ner) @ A Cup of Coffee and a Book

So, Bout of Books 14 ended and I did not finished my goals. Well, I did finished one of the books and started the other one but, overall, I did not read as much as I had planned. I blame my second book. Though I was quite excited to read it, I’m just not connecing with it. Shame, really!

Check out my progress:

Witch Hunter

I finished Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker and I really but really liked it. Definitely one of my favourites from this year.

My review for this one will be up somewhere within the next two weeks and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoy YA fantasy books with witches.

I started Hunter by Mercedes Lackey. Damn, my expectations for this one were so high and I feel like I’m tumbling down. So slow, I’m not connecting with Joy (the main character) and I have no idea what’s going on. I’m 31% done and I think I might this one aside. Which is a shame ’cause the premise sounded way too good.

As for the challenges, I’ll leave a list here with the links so you can click and check them out 🙂

How was your Bout of Books this last week? Did you managed to fulfil all your goals?

Nevermind my progress… didn’t read that much yesterday and I’m quite ashamed of that :S

Day 7: Sunday 23/08

Sarah Reads Too Much — What to read next?

In this challenge you have to recommend 3 (three) books only that I’ve read this year and that I think people should have on their TBR. I’m quite sure that the books I’ll be picking will already be on your TBR but, still, it doesn’t hurt to recommend books, does it?

I highly recommend you all to check these books out. Choosing only 3 felt like a betrayal to all the other books you guys should add to your TBR but these deserve a special place because they were unique in their own way and I think more people should pick them up.

Which books do you recommend me to add to my TBR?And how was your Bout of Books this week?

Day 5: Friday 21/08

Blue Books and Butterflies — Character Soulmates

In this challenge you have to pick-up two characters from different books and pair them together. And I know just the characters I want for this 🙂

Faolan from The Bridei Chronicles by Juliet Marillier
Celaena from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Oh, man… I can totally see these two characters together. They are both assassins, stubborn and hot. Though I think Faolan would totally flip with certain things that Celaena would do and say – especially her admiration for pretty dresses. I totally ship Faolaena hehe xD

Day 6: Saturday 22/08

Steph in Wonderland — Road Trip

“For this challenge, I’d like for you to come up with a list of the top 4-5 states/places you’d love to visit and find a book (you either read or want to read) that takes place in that state/place or a book by an author who lives or is from there.”

Dang!! There are so many places in books I want to go!! Even the AU ones. But, check out the top 4 I created:

  • Hogwarts: Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
    (of course… who wouldn’t LOVE to visit Hogwarts?!)
  • New Zealand: Juliet Marillier
    (the Master is from New Zealand and it’s a place I would love to visit one day. And since I can’t actually choose The Lord of The Rings because they are set in Middle Earth – though the movies were filmed in NZ – I decided to pick up my favourite author :D)
  • Paris: Da Vinci’s Code by Dan Brown
    (I’m cheating in this one because I’ve been to Paris but I don’t really remember much. So I wish to go back there and enjoy it to the fullest!)
  • Scotland: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
    (Though I haven’t finished the book – but I did watched the series (OMG!!!) – I so but so want to go to Scotland! Do I need to rally say whay?)

What about you? What are your character soulmates? And where would you love to go?

Day 4: Thursday 20/08

Kimberly Faye Reads — 4 Seasons Book Covers

‘For this challenge, you need to convey the four seasons in book covers – through color, title, cover, etc. You can be literal or take a more creative approach. Anything goes! Just show me four seasons in book covers.’

This was slightly harder than the other challenges. Coming up with books that matched the four seasons wasn’t easy. Specially Summer… But, I made it and here are the choices (by colour!):

  • Spring (Green): Graceling;
  • Summer (Red): Crown of Midnight;
  • Autumn (Orange/Lavender): Delirium;
  • Winter (White): The Iron Daughter;

Oh, and there’s Harry, so happy to be reunited with Celaena after two days. He simply adored her the moment he saw her. What can I do? Who can say no to that little face? 🙂

Which books did you picked for your four seasons?

Day 3: Wednesday 19/08

Rocky Top Real Talk — MASH

‘MASH is a fun little game where you write up options for your future and then after getting a number, go through until you have one choice for each category – and have your future right there in front of you!’

I had quite a blast doing this challenge. Check it out (and pardon my horrible spelling :S):

So, apparently I live in Gatlin (from Beautiful Creatures – using a lot of this book in this Bout of Books) with my significant other Perry (from Under the Never Skyswoon!!) with our pet daemon (from Northern Lights) and I work as a wizard (from every single fantasy book featuring wizards and witches – mainly Harry Potter and Witch Hunter).

Sorry, no Harry this time. He’ll be making appearances on challenges concerning showing off my books!

How did your MASH turned out? Let me know your future in the comments 😉

Day 2: Tuesday 18/08

The Book Monsters — Book Scavenger Hunt

In this challenge you have to search for books that follow specific characteristics. Here they are:

1. A Book that begins with “B”  (for Bout of Books!);
2. A book you’re planning to read/currently reading for Bout of Books;
3. Blue Book(s);
4. Books from your favorite genre!;
5. A book on your TBR shelf, or your full TBR shelves;

Now, I will be adding this challenge on Instagram so you can follow me there. However, this will be my official Bout of Books entry post 🙂

The fact that most of the books are blue was on purpose 😉

Now, I had to separate a book from the list because point number 2, ‘A book you’re planning to read/currently reading for Bout of Books’ is a Kobo book and I totally forgot to add it to the original photo. So, I took a photo of a book I’m planning to read for this read-a-thon:

Harry is hitting on Celaena! He just couldn’t stop as soon as he saw the beautiful cover of Throne of Glass. Can’t really blame him 🙂

I adore doing this sort of challenges. The fact that I just stand there looking at my shelves and realising I have quite a variety of covers/books is quite amazing.

Which blue books did you chose?

Day 1: Monday 17/08

Between Library Shelves — Fictional World Travel

In this challenge you have to pick up 3-6 books set in a country that is not your own. Since I live in Portugal, this was quite of an easy challenge for me. Check out the books/country I decided to chose:

I actually managed to pick up 6 books. And, of course that Harry had to make a cameo… he’s my sidekick 🙂 And I’m super excited about this challenge. As soon as I looked at my bookshelves I immediately knew which books to pick. It was easy!

Did you managed to do this challenge? Which books did you chose?

But, not to worry; here I am with the schedule of this month’s Bout of Books and my goals. I will later post my updates for Day 1 so keep an eye out for that 😉

These are the books I intend on reading this week for the read-a-thon. I hope to at least be able to start Gathering Deep by the end of it but I’ll be happy if I manage to start Hunter.

So, what are your goals?

Review Copy Cleanup 4.0

Click on the picture to access Celine @Nyx Book Reviews sign-up post.

This is a month-long event hosted by the lovely ladies Vicky @Books, Biscuits & Tea and Celine @Nyx Book Reviews where you try to tackle down all those review books you have on your TBR.

I’ve participated last year (see here) but unfortunately that didn’t go quite well. Maybe this year I’ll manage to read all those NetGalley books I have for review that I really, but really want to read and those books I’ve promised to read and review but ended up forgetting (sorry!).

I know that most of my ARCs are from NetGalley and Edelweiss but I treat them as books sent by the authors for me to review.

Here are some books (some because I’m still planning the list) I WILL try to read and review for this challenge (click on the books to go to Goodreads):

I really want to try and read at least these three books. Fingers crossed that I can manage to do so.

2014 Finish Series Challenge Sign-Up

Finish Series

Have you ever started a series but never managed to finish it because of reasons?! Well, that happens to me quite a lot and even though I know there are a few challenges like this all over the Internet, I’ve decided to start and create my own.

In this challenge all you have to do is finish any series you have started before 2014.

The Rules:

– This challenge will run from January 1st to December 31st, 2014. Each month the participants will be able to share their reviews of a certain book from a saga they continued.
– There will be a giveaway at the end of the challenge but only participants and those who have managed to finish at least ONE saga can participate.
– Any saga counts but you must have started it BEFORE 2014, which means that you can’t start a series in 2014 and then finish it for the challenge. I will allow participant to sign-up with one book left in a saga.
– I will also allow short-stories though those won’t count as the only books left on a certain saga (meaning, if you only have the short-stories of, for instance “Delirium”, those won’t count – only if you have one full-length book in the saga and the short-stories, will I accept it).
– If you want, you can re-read the first or second book in the saga.
– If you sign-up to this challenge, share and/or add its button on your website with the link for this page.
– Sign-ups are open until December 10th, 2014.
– Any questions leave a comment on this post and I’ll try to answer back to you ASAP.

Level 1: Dedicated (1 to 3 series)
Level 2: Determined (4 to 6 series)
Level 3: Doped (7 to 9 series)
Level 4: Dead (10 to 12 series)

The maximum of series is set for twelve but if you happen to read more than that amount, you are awesome!

2013 Challenges Wrap-Up

2013 is ending and with it all my challenges. How did it went? Rather well to be honest. I wasn’t expecting to be able to say “Hey, I’ve made it!” but I did! Well, apart from the horror one but, we’ll get there… eventually.

Let’s begin with:

Initial Goal: 55 books
Finish Goal: 63 books

I had challenge myself to read 55 books on 2013 Goodreads Reading Challenge. I reached my gold somewhere around September (me thinks!). I actually thought I wasn’t going to be able to read 55 books this year because of my pathetic reading-slump in May and them college in September till December. But I did and I’m very proud of myself.

I might challenge myself to read 60 books in 2014 😉

Initial Goal: 12 books
Finish Goal: 16 books (though some I’m not certain can be labelled Dystopia)

Hosted by the lovely Ula @Blog of Erised, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to reach my goal but, truth is, I went further than my initial idea. I had planned on reading only 12 books out of the 24 that was stipulated and ended up reading 16. Yap, I reached Level 3: Revolutionist.

And Ula is hosting this challenge again in 2014 but I’ll talk about it on my upcoming 2014 Resolutions post. But you can sneak the challenge here.

Here’s what I’ve read:

  1. Broken [Extrahumans #1] – Susan Jane Bigelow;
  2. Under the Never Sky [Under the Never Sky #1] – Veronica Rossi;
  3. Insurgent [Divergent #2] – Veronica Roth;
  4. Delirium [Delirium #1] – Lauren Oliver;
  5. The Mad Scientist’s Daughter – Cassandra Rose Clarke;
  6. Viral Nation [Viral Nation #1] – Shaunta Grimes;
  7. These Broken Stars [Starbound #1] – Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner;
  8. Steel Lily [The Periodic Series #1] – Megan Curd;
  9. Countdown – Michelle Rowen;
  10. Reign of Blood [Reign of Blood #1] – Alexia Purdy;
  11. I Am Legend – Richard Matheson (PT);
  12. Night of the Purple Moon [The Toucan Trilogy #1] – Scott Cramer;
  13. Colony East [The Toucan Trilogy #2] – Scott Cramer;
  14. Aberrant [Aberrant #1] – Ruth Silver;
  15. Moirai [Aberrant #2] – Ruth Silver;
  16. Pawn [The Blackcoat Rebellion #1] – Aimée Carter;

There are books I’m not certain that can be considered Dystopian. And I didn’t asked Ula for my new Badge (Revolutionist) because of that. Here are the books I’m not entirely sure but added anyway:

In case there’s a book on my goal list that you know doesn’t fit the genre, let me know.
Still, despite these four books, I think I did pretty good in this challenge.

My Badge:

Initial Goal: 5 books
Finish Goal: 4 books

  1. The Woman in Black – Susan Hill;
  2. I Hunt Killers [Jasper Dent #1] – Barry Lyga;
  3. I Am Legend – Richard Matheson;
  4. Game [Jasper Dent #2] – Barry Lyga;

Even though I Hunt Killers and Game aren’t exactly horror, I’ve added them as well since they freaked me out with the whole psychological thriller embedded in it.

Initial Goal: 2 books
Finish Goal: 2 books

  1. The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger;
  2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Stephen Chbosky;

Pretty surprised with myself in this challenge. Contemporary as never been my favourite genre but 2013 show me there are some good Contemporary books out there that are worth reading.

There you good guys, all my 2013 Resolutions are done and I cannot believe I’ve managed to keep them up for the whole year. I’ll be creating a post dedicated to my 2014 Challenges and might even add a page for them… but I’m still planning that.

In the meantime, let me know how your 2013 challenge were by commenting below or leaving any links to your post concerning it. I’m curious to know how you guys did 🙂

  4. The Space Within;
  5. Reading Paranormal;

I might not have commented this blogs during the week but I’ve checked out the updates. I admit that this Bout of Books wasn’t the best one but that has to do with my terrible week.

Bookish Wishes Challenge @Kelsey’s Cluttered Bookshelf

 If you could be like any character from a fictional book, who would it be? What do you like about them?Tell me why!

Does it have to be only one character? Damn it….

I think I would like to be like Caitrin from Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier. I like the fact that she grows stronger during the book, that she never looses hope even in the hardest of times and she’s a fighter. She’s a good friend and someone who places those she loves above anything else. She’s very human in every single way.

Acrostic Book Poem @I Read, Ergo I Write

Tristan go on a quest for his lover’s hand,
A witch’s curse to be broken within a
Realm of magic with roads that never end.
Distant adventures never read before,
United, Tristan and Yvaine’s story is a gift to us,
Sweet and marvellous their passion will shine,
To everyone who loves and dreams of Stardust.

Bout of Books 8.0 {Day 3}

Participant 138: Ner @ A Cup of Coffee and a Book

Before starting the challenges, I completely forgot to post how my reading is going. I’m still reading City of Bones because I couldn’t read that much on Monday. Last night I’ve managed to read quite a lot but not enough to finish it. I might be able to finish it between today and tomorrow and start or Frostbite or Lady of Devices.

Actually, you’ll be choosing which one I’ll be reading next. You can leave a comment below saying which one I should read after City of Bones. Or you can leave a comment on my Goals post here just in case you have no idea which books I’m planning on reading for this read-a-thon.

My future reading will be entirely on your hands 😉

Day 3 – Wednesday, 21/08:

TBR List Challenge @Musings of a Bookship Girl

1. Which 5 books are at the top of your TBR pile at this moment?

Oh boy… I don’t particularly like to do a list of books that are on top but I will try. I have a few ones that I haven’t picked up yet so I will consider those as my top 5 books on my TBR.

  1. Beautiful Chaos (Caster Chronicles #3) – Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl;
  2. Demondglass (Hex Hall #2) – Rachel Hawkins;
  3. Pure (Pure #1) – Julianna Baggott;
  4. Infinity (The Chronicles of Nick #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon;
  5. A Casual Vacancy – J.K. Rowling (which is really pathetic that I haven’t picked this one up… yet);

2. If I gave you a wad of cash and sent you into a bookshop right now, which 5 books would you buy to add to the stack?

Okay, I could never choose only five if I had enough money and if I was on a bookstore. I would buy some sequels and some first-in-series, some books that might have caught my attention… but, I would maybe have these babies on my bucket if they were there:

  1. Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky #2) – Veronica Rossi;
  2. Scent of Magic (Avry of Kazan/ The Healer #2) – Maria V. Snyder;
  3. Spell Bound (Hex Hall #3) – Rachel Hawkins;
  4. Defiance (Defiance #1) – C.J. Redwine;
  5. Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1) – Sarah Maas;

Book Spine Poetry @Such a Novel Idea:

I literally suck at this.

Here’s my Book Spine Poetry… it could be much better but I found out that all the books I have don’t really help when it comes to this :S

She, the Beautiful Chaos of Fire,
Walked Under the Never Sky,
in search of Firelight.

See? What did I tell you? It sounds awful and it doesn’t make any sense. One day, I hope, I’ll be able to create some nice poetry out of book spines 😉

Day 2 – Tuesday, 20/08:

Re-Title It @Music Plus Books

Oh dear…

Re-title the book I’m currently reading, that book being “City of Bones”? Okay, let’s see what I can do about that!

City of Bones

The Angel’s Cup

Okay, it sounds sooooooo bad!

Since I’ve already read the book, I pretty much know the whole plot so it was slightly easy to change the title. I think “The Angel’s Cup” gives us a little bit of insight of what the story really is about.

‘Cause, seriously, why is the book called “City of Bones” when they only go to the Bones City once and the whole book is about trying to get the Mortal Cup, the Angel’s Cup?!

But, hey, that’s my solemn opinion.

If you could re-title City of Bones, which name would you give it?!

Day 1 – Monday, 19/08:

Bookish Bucket List @Sarah Says Read

What is one bookish thing you want to do before you die? OR what is one thing you want to do before you die that was inspired by a book you read?

I have at least two thing I want to do before I die is going to Wizardry World of Harry Potter in Orlando. I know it’s not only a bookish thing because there’s the movies but Harry Potter, as you all know, it’s an important thing in my life.

Pairathon @Book Pairing:

I normally don’t eat/drink when I read. I’m so into the book that I forget to eat and drink. And when I’m hungry, I normally eat an yoghurt or drink some milk.

However, when I began this Bout of Books I was so hungry that I picked up some cookies and was eating and reading at the same time.

Here’s what I was eating (and will probably continue eating for this read-a-thon):

It’s a mixture of several cookies in a small package. I don’t really know the name – my mum threw away the box – so I can’t really share it with you. Sorry about that :S

XX Ner

Bout of Books 8.0 {Goals}

Participant 138: Ner @ A Cup of Coffee and a Book

This must have been the hardest list of books I’ve ever adventured myself in doing. Why?! Well, I had plan, then I changed it, then I changed it again and now I’m going to stick with the very last list of goals I’d planned. Or else I’ll just be changing it and changing it.

So, for this read-a-thon I’m challenging myself to re-read a book, read a classic, start a sequel and, who knows, read an ebook.

Easy enough, right?

Here it is, the books:

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1) – Cassandra Clare

With the movie coming out in a week, I’ve decided to re-read City of Bones since there are certain details I completely forgot, even though I’ve read the book in March.

Frostbite (Vampire Academy #2) – Richelle Mead

Will you guys hate me if I told you I absolutely loved VA, I’m super duper excited for the movie but haven’t read the continuation of the series?! I know, shame on me. How can I call myself a fan if I haven’t read the sequels? Plus, how can I resist Dimitri?!

Lady of Devices (Magnificient Devices #1) – Shelley Adina

This baby has been waiting for me to pick it up ever since I’ve downloaded it. I’ve read amazing reviews about this book and since Kobo had the first volume on their site for free, I’ve decided to try my luck with it.

Frankenstein – Mary Shelley

I’ve been wanting to read Frankenstein since… I have no idea since when… but never really came around to pick it up and read it. So, I’m using this read-a-thon as a motivator! Let’s see if I can read this book 🙂
