Musing Mondays 2

This meme is hosted by Should Be Reading. Each week, MizB posts a “musing” question concerning a book and all participants answer in their own post.

Today musing is:
To tell the book(s) I’ve recently bought for myself or someone else, and why I chose that/those book(s).

The book I’ve bought recently was Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the third book in the Caster Chronicles. I bought on TBD so I still don’t have the book physically on my hands but I’m quite desperate to have it. It was the first book I bought in two weeks 🙂

I bought it because, if you remember this Musing Mondays, I’ve start reading the series and fell in love with it. I own Beautiful Creatures and Carla @O Livro Que Deu Um Pum lent me the second, Beautiful Darkness. So, before I’ve finished the second volume, I bought the third and I’m already saving money to buy the fourth, Beautiful Redemption – the conclusion of the series.

And you? Any books you’ve bought recently?

Today musing is:
To tell what I’m reading right now – what I’m thinking of it, so far; why I chose it; what I am (or not) enjoying it.

I’m currently reading Beautiful Darkness, the sequel to Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. And, I’ll be using this post as a THANK YOU to Carla @O Livro Que Deu Um Pum for allowing me to read her copy which was gathering dust on my shelf waiting for her to come to Lisbon. Long story short – she asked me to order it for her and I have it since December with me. I’m going to be with her only in February when classes start.

Anyway, moving on.

LOVED Beautiful Creatures so, as soon as I’ve finished it, I picked up Carla’s copy to start the sequel. So far, I’m enjoying it very much. With the tension left by the last book, I’m not surprised to see things changed. The whole plot shifted from the first book though several details are equal – the song; the flashbacks. However, I’m a bit dizzy with what happened to Lena – she just lost her mind. I have several theories about it but I’m not sure what’s going to happen afterwards.

But I I did sneaked some of the last pages and, to be honest, I literally freaked out. What I’ve read made me stare at the pages like “WHAT?” – a good what, by the way. I just can’t wait to see what’s going to happen and understand all that’s going on.

I chose to start the Caster Chronicles mainly because I wanted but the movie coming out next month was also a good reason. I prefer to read the book before the movie comes out and though the Caster Chronicles were already on my wishlist, I’ve never gotten around to pick it up until now.

And you? What are you currently reading?

Today musing is:
To describe one of my reading habits.

One of my reading habits is to read the last sentence of any book I buy, burrow, receive as a gift. I always do that and my friends normally look at me like I’m some sort of lunatic because of it. Even in the bookstore I do that.

But I sometimes read the name of the chapters – if the book happens to have chapters with names. There’s so much you can imagine with those titles, it’s overwhelming. I, one day, created a completely whole story of a book because of that. You can picture my surprise when I’ve reached the end of the book and the story was the complete opposite of what I’ve picture.

Anyway, MizB asked us for one reading habit and I’ve shared two. Of course there’s a lot more to the list, but for now I’ll leave you with these two.

And you? Any reading habits you’d like to share?

Today musing is:
Is there a particular book that is your nemesis – the book you’re determined to one day finish?

I have a book that is still on my “currently reading” status and I simply can’t continue it; Inheritance (The Inheritance Cycle #4) by Christopher Paolini. My mum read it and is always teasing me with things that will happen in the book, trying to make me read it and finally finish it. Unfortunately, there are moments in the book that are so boring I fall asleep whenever I pick it up. Which is sad ’cause I adore the saga and cannot wait to know (I mean, I already know but still) how the last egg will hatch.

I will eventually finish it… one day, I hope.

And you? Do you have any nemesis?

Today musing is:
What was the last book you couldn’t finish and why?

I normally try really hard to finish a book even if I’m not enjoying it. I never managed to finish any book by Virginia Woolf so I labelled her as “never-liked-and-never-will”.

But the last book I’ve started and couldn’t even managed to finish was The Blue Door by Christa Kinde. It was really hard for me to stop reading and give it one cup but truth is, the story was so childish, so “God is my Lord” and stuff I found it so boring I had to stop. At first glance it was interesting enough though I don’t normally read books with Angels. But around way through the book everything was so dull and boring I just had to stop.

What about you? Any book you couldn’t finish?

Today musing is:
How do you organize/store your books? Do you go through them often? Or do you pretty much just shelve them and then leave them alone until you need them?

This question is just perfect for my current situation. Yesterday I was at my new flat storing my books – only to unpack them and have more space in the house. So, I had all my books on my bookshelves – temporarily since I’m sure I’m going to change it– and I went through them to store them.

I normally place them on my shelves by language first. The top shelf is for my Portuguese books even though they don’t fit all in there. Normally I have to mix the Portuguese with the English.

After that I try to organize them by surname.

However, yesterday my Portuguese books were organized by importance, meaning that the books I read only once or rarely read are on the back – I have two rows of books on each bookshelf – and the most important ones on the front like the Master, Juliet Marillier.

The second shelf is mainly dedicated to my English/Fantasy/YA/Paranormal books and I was really careful organizing those by size first and then surname.

My sister said I was mental for doing so but I do like to have them all organize like that. And my brother-in-law thought I should be on the asylum since I was talking to the books as if they were real people.

My classics were in the last shelf and they were, as well, organized by surname, specially my Penguin ones. Sure I have other sort of classics – Portuguese ones – and those are by size.

I have to admit that yesterday my attention was mainly focused on my English/Fantasy/YA/Paranormal books. I was really careful shelving them even though they are a bit in a mess as of lately. I’m still waiting for books to arrive and for my wall shelves.

I don’t like to have two rows of books, one in the back and the other in the front. For instance, I wanted my copy of The Hobbit so I could re-read the book before the movie came out, and had to take most of the books in the front row to get that one. Pathetic in my humble opinion even though I am aware of the amount of space you’ll save by placing the books that way.

And yes, I go through them quite often. Specially when I receive or buy a new book. I have to find some space for it so I end up re-shelving them a bit.

And what about you? Any sort of organization on your shelves?

Today musing is:
Have you ever read a book after watching the movie/television version only to find that you don’t like the book as much as the adaptation?

Well, I think that never happened to me, at least not that I can remember at the moment. I normally prefer the books to the movie adaptation.

However, I do admit that certain scenes work better in the adaptation than in the book itself. I’m going to give an example: Pride & Prejudice by Joe Wright, when Mr. Darcy tells Lizzie he loves her, I LOVE that scene in the movie better than in the book. But that’s me, of course.

And what about you?

Today musing is:
Do you read the ending before you start a book? Do you ever skip ahead to read the ending?

In fact, I do. It’s only of my rituals is reading the last paragraph of the book. Which sometimes sucks ’cause you find things that might leave you shocked. But it’s my ritual and it makes my skin crawl to read it.

And yes, I sometimes do skip ahead to read the ending. There are books so boring at times that you simply skip those moments in search of the action.

And you? Do you read the end first?

This Monday, MizB gave us the opportunity to answer several questions or choose one. I choose only 2 questions I’ve decided to answer. Here they are:

1st. If you could create a soundtrack for a book you’ve read recently, which songs would you use and why? {source}

You all know I do that quite often. Even though My Book Soundtrack has been quiet lately – too much things going on and too little time to sit and listen to music. However, there’s this song planning on my mind which I think could connect in a way to Legends of Marithia by Peter Koevari.

The song is called The Reign and it’s by the wonderful Tarja Turunen. I have two different versions of this song – the sang one and the instrumental one – and whenever I listen to is I have goose-bumps.

Here are the two different versions.

Isn’t the song absolutely beautiful?

As for an entire soundtrack, well, I do need to sit down with all my music and create a soundtrack for a specific book. I admit that I remembered this song because I was listening to it while I was writing this post *blushes*

2nd. Do you read outside your preferred genre? Has your preferred genre change? {source}

Sometimes, I do. You all know I’m a fantasy lover. I just love fantasy, things that people normally say don’t exist – how dare you! – and don’t understand. Fantasy, for me, is a reality escape, it’s abandoning the raw and cruel world outside and enter a new and warm one.

However, I do like to sometimes step out of that fantasy world and enter reality for a bit. Even if that reality is, perhaps, a little too overwhelm.

I like conspiracy books – Dan Brown – and some historical novels – Philippa Gregory. But creating this blog presented me to genres I thought I would roll my eyes and would put aside.

Paranormal, Young Adult, Supernatural, Dystopian, Science-Fiction; these are all genres that are connected to fantasy but I never gave much attention to. Specially Paranormal YA and Dystopian.

Today musing is:
What is the most recent book you purchased, or brought home from the local library? What made you pick it? Have you started reading it, right away, or will you wait for a bit?

The last books I bought were The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky which arrived today and I’m really excited and Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins, the continuation of Hex Hall which I’m still waiting.

I also bought on my local bookstore City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. And this week I’ll be definitely buying a certain book.

I haven’t started The Perks of Being a Wallflower neither City of Bones but I’ll beginning the first within the next week perhaps since this book is also for my University. As for the rest, I’m still waiting for them to arrive and to have a little bit more of time.

And you?! Any book buying recently?

Today musing is:
Do you have people online that you often discuss the books you read with? Not just book groups, but individual readers who share the same taste in books? If so, what do you like best about this? If not, do you wish you did?

I guess that my friends in Goodreads are those online people… Normally, we discuss the books we read on our reviews, sharing some interesting point-of-views and stuff.

I do discuss a lot of things about books with Carla and some colleges who also like the same genre and books as I do. It’s nice to see the different perspectives one has towards a book and characters and plot.

You?! Anyone to discuss your books with?

Do you ever get crushes on fictional characters? Name one (or a few), and tell what you liked…

Yah, I do. There are so many great male characters I find myself sometimes wishing for him to be real.

To name a few would be difficult but I’ll try:

  • Almost every single male character from the Master;
  • Harry Potter – yah, I did have a crush on him… and I do have a crush on Daniel;
  • Matthew Clairmount (A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness);
  • Prince Ash (The Iron King by Julie Kagawa);
  • Peeta (The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins);
  • Archer (Firelight by Kristen Callihan);
  • Po (Graceling by Kristin Cashore);
  • Cas (Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake) – recent… :P;
  • Mr. Darcy (Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen);

Well… there’s a lot more but I’m not recalling any at the moment. Plus, I’m too lazy to get up and see my books 🙂

And what about you? Any crush on a fictional character?

Do you have a system as to which books to read from your “requested review” pile? What is it? What about when there are too many to read in a certain time frame? {apologies to those who don’t review}

I normally pick them up by order; meaning, the first author who sent me the request is the first I read. However, if there is a deadline, I read that one first and try to do the review quite soon.

And what about you?

Do you have a favourite series? Do you have a favourite book out of that series?

Yes, I do have a few!

I’m a Potterhead meaning Harry Potter is one of my utmost favourite series. I’m also a fan of Sevenwaters by the Master; I was a fan of Twilight though now I’m slightly tired of it; Hex Hall became a favourite even though I just read the first book; The Hunger Games of course; The Chronicles of Narnia though I read those books a long time ago (I remember enjoying them quite a lot); Inheritance Cycle which I still need to finish the last book in the series; I’m guessing The Iron Fey Series will become a favourite; Darkest London and again just read the first book…

Yah, I believe you can see I have quite a few favourite series, and it still missing some 😀

And what about you? Any favourite series?

Actually, no I don’t. I know I should but when I’m reading I really like to be inside the story without pausing. I might just write down the chapter and something to remember later but it’s really rare for me to take notes. I guess that’s the reason why my reviews are so shallow.

And you, do you take notes while reading?

Have you ever considered writing a book before? What genre would you write?

Yes, in fact I have. I call myself a writer despite none of my stories being finished and sometimes starting a new one and then stopping it and never picking it up again. I would write fantasy but recently I’ve been planning a Young Adult one with witches. But fantasy will always be my passion.

I’ve started writing a story, ten years ago, about fairies and forbidden loves and prophecies. I can say I have indeed finished that one but, since I was very young, the entire plot, characters and other stuff were a bit messy. So, I stopped and whenever I tried to re-write it, I just couldn’t do it.

But I’m still planning on, one day, publish it. It’s my passion and my book and my baby so I will (hopefully) one day re-write it, like it and try to publish it. Then, I’ll pray to it to be translated and being sold outside Portugal.

What about you? Any writers following my blog?
