Tag | Peculiar Tag

Today I bring you a brand new tag. I’m a bit late with this tag since I have been quite busy lately (and I’ve also been ill last week) and I had this on my drafts for a while… but here it is!!! So thank you Ana @Nerdy Bookworm for tagging me to do the Peculiar Tag. This tag was created by Jesse the Reader and you can watch his video here

Here we go:

1) Abandoned House:
A book that you abandoned but you end up giving a second chance.

Some years ago (I think maybe twelve), I started reading Dracula by Bram Stoker but wasn’t really into it and ended up putting it aside. When I had British Victorian Literature, I had to pick up Dracula again since my oral presentation was about it. I ended up loving it so much it became one of my favourite classics 😉

2) Vintage Pictures:
A book that you wanted to see illustrated.

Those of you who have read this book can understand why I picked up this book. The imaginary in this book is amazing and having it as a illustrated book – say, Tim Burton-ish style or even Guilhermo del Toro (okay, maybe they’re too dark but I love their talent!) – would be amazing 🙂

3) Loop:
A series you wouldn’t mind reading over and over again

Harry Potter of course!! I mean, once a Potterhead, always a Potterhead, am I right?

4) Peculiar Children:
An ability of a character that you would like to have

For this one I have to choose Avry from Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder. Her power is to heal people with her touch and, come on, who wouldn’t love to be able to heal people?

5) Mrs. Peregrine:
A favorite character that is a leader

Can I say Tobias “Four” Eaton from Divergent by Veronica Roth? I mean, he ends up being technically like a leader and he is one of my ultimate favourite characters (and book boyfriend!) 😀

6) Jacob:
A story where a normal boy discovers a new world

Well… this one isn’t that hard since I’m going to pick up Harry Potter, again!

7) Emma:
A brave character

You know what, I always end up picking up Sorcha from Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier (my Master) and/or Liadan from Son of the Shadows because these two characters are definitely the strongest ones I read and always look up to. If you guys want to read about two determined, independent, strong and simply amazing characters, these two books (well, the whole Sevenwaters saga) to read!

8) Millard:
A book that looks invisible but should be read for more people

I have to pick up a book I read this month which is The Petrified Flesh by Cornelia Funke. I LOVED this book and I don’t see that many people talk about it – I know, it’s a German book and all but, come on, Cornelia Funke wrote Inkheart (I didn’t read it but even I know about that one!). It’s an amazing fantasy book that I think everyone who simply likes the genre will adore 😉

9) Olive:
A book that you bought and went straight ahead to the top of your tbr

Well, I haven’t bought any book recently but I admit that as soon as I bought Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas it went straight to the top of my TBR – though I still need to re-read Crown of Midnight before picking it up (I’ve been a slow reader lately!)

10) Hugh:
A book that you read that gave you so many feels

Despite the obvious flaws and kind of weird canon theories and all, I have to go with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child because it sure brought back a lot of feels when I read it!

11) Enoch:
A character you would bring back to life

Every single character J.K. Rowling has killed throughout Harry Potter (apart from the obvious evil ones!!) WHY DID YOU HAVE TO KILL THEM ALL?! *ugly crying*

12) Bronwyn:
A physically strong character

Of course the kick-ass Celaena Sardothien because she can literally kill you with just a glance your way and have tea five seconds later 😉

This is one of my favourite fan-arts of Celaena (Aelin) by Charlie Bowater because she looks almost exactly as I pictured her. Check out Charlie’s work here.

13) Hollowgast:
A book that you read and you didn’t liked

The Witches of East End by Melissa de la Cruz. Seriously, WHY DOES THIS BOOK EXISTS?! I never hated a book so much in my life!

14) Wights:
A book that looks like it used all the cliches you have already seen before

Bloodspell by Amalie Howard. I felt this book was too much Twilight meets A Discovery of Witches, it didn’t feel like anything new to me!

Who I Tag:

Well, this won’t be new because, as always, I tag EVERYONE who wants to do this tag! You know the drill, just say I tagged you and leave me know you did so I can check it out 😉

Tag | This or This? Book Tag

Happy Sunday people 🙂

Today I’m bringing you something I haven’t done in a while: a tag!!

I was tagged by Ana @Nerdy Bookworm so THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤

Basically, this is a book battle where you choose from my wining book and the books I picked up the one you prefer or are curios about. It sounds kind of complicated but when you start reading my post, you’ll get the hang of it. Also, any questions, feel free to ask 😉

Here are the rules:

  • Mention the blog who tagged you in the beginning of your post;
  • The first book is the book that won the battle of the person who tagged you;
  • You have to follow the order of the book’s list the other person has gave you, explain why you chose the book;
  • Once you have your wining book, you chose 7 books for the people you tag.

Okay, let’s see how this goes:

1st Round:
The Girl on the Train vs. The Longest Ride

I have to choose The Girl on the Train because Nicholas Sparks‘ romances aren’t exactly the sort of book I enjoy reading. Also, The Girl in the Train sounds like an exciting thriller 🙂

2nd Round:
The Girl on the Train vs. The Casual Vacancy

I pick The Casual Vacancy for this one because it’s a J.K. Rowling book and I actually started it once but had to put it aside because I still had Harry Potter as the ultimate Rowling’s writing style. And I want to be able to say that I’ve read something different by J.K. Rowling 🙂

3rd Round:
The Casual Vacancy vs. City of Glass

Well, this isn’t fair but I’ll go with City of Glass! Not only because I really liked it, I’m currently trying to finish The Mortal Instruments series and because of MALEC!!!! Enough said xD

4th Round:
City of Glass vs. Everland

Even though Peter Pan is one of my favourite classics, I have to choose City of Glass again!! Everland sounds pretty interesting but it doesn’t have MALEC!!!!

5th Round:
City of Glass vs. Death with Interruptions

Oh boy!! Again, City of Glass. My experience with José Saramago wasn’t the best one and even though this book sounds amazing – my sister actually owns a copy of Death with Interruptions and even started reading it and enjoyed what she read so far – I’m not emotionally ready to try Saramago again :S

6th Round:
City of Glass vs. Socrates in Love

Again, City of Glass!! I admit that I’ve never heard of Socrates in Love before so that might be to blame :S

7th & Final Round:
City of Glass vs. Paper Towns

Damn!! City of Glass again! I’m not very keen on trying John Green anytime soon because contemporary isn’t my favourite genre and between urban fantasy and contemporary, fantasy will always win!

Winner: City of Glass

My books:

  1. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas;
  2. These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner;
  3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Steven Chbosky;
  4. The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker;
  5. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare;
  6. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë;
  7. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer;

I tag:

Have fun everyone 🙂

Random Questions About Me

So, no time no see!

Today I decided to bring you a random tag I saw somewhere on the blogosphere. I don’t remember exactly where I saw it so I can’t link it to the proper person. If I happen to find out, I’ll leave the link 😉

This tag is mainly about silly questions concerning me and I found them so hilarious I had to share it with you. Plus, the fact that I have been slightly absent also helped me decide to post it 🙂

Okay, here we go:

  • Do you like blue cheese?

I simply don’t like cheese let alone blue one (I didn’t even know such thing existed!). I only like cheese on my pizza and on garlic bread… but cheese alone… *shivers*

  • Have you ever been drunk?

Yes! Well, not drunk as not remembering what happened or anything but drunk as being totally silly and pathetic and making my family roll their eyes 🙂

  • Do you own a gun?

Nope! I do have a knife in my bedroom though that made several appearances on my Bookstagram 😉

  • What flavour of Kool Aid was your favourite?

Since I have no idea what that is because I don’t think we have that here in Portugal… I’ll have to skip this one.

  • Do you get nervous before doctor appointment?

Always! I’m a bit hypochondriac but that sort that tries to avoid doctors in case I’m dying from a terrible disease. I know, I shouldn’t, but whenever I have a twinge of pain, I won’t survive the year (trust me, I’m like that and can be pretty annoying!)

  • What do you think of hot dogs?

I like to eat it but since I have a stupid allergy to pork meat, I try not to eat that much. I know, I could try other kind of sausage but, let’s be honest, a hot dog without pork meat? I just wouldn’t be the same 🙂

  • Favourite Christmas movie.

A Disney version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ that my sister and I normally watch every single year!

  • What do you prefer to drink in the morning?

I always need my coffee in order to fully wake up… and I normally don’t drink anything during breakfast since I eat cereals and don’t drink the milk – I know, what a waste! But when I eat a proper breakfast, it’s normally chocolate milk 🙂

  • Can you do push ups?

There was a time in my life I could because of PE. Now, not really!

  • What’s you favourite piece of jewellery?

My father works in the jewellery business so I grew up surrounded by it. But jewellery that I own I love my witch’s necklace that my sister gave me, my rings (they also make a cameo in some of my bookstagram pics) and a special ring that belonged to my mum – it’s a serpent and I always thought it was my sister’s because she is the eldest… but she gave up on that ring and on my 20th birthday, my mum gave it to me ^_^

  • Do you have A.D.D.?

I don’t think I do but when I was a child my mum thought I was hyperactive.

  • What’s your favourite shoe?

My converses!! If I had Doc Martens I would say my boots but since I don’t… my converses are everything to me 😉

  • Middle name.

I don’t have a middle name though I wish I had. But a friend of mine normally calls me Leonor Marina and I admit I quite like it 😉

  • Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment.

I should be wearing my glasses. It’s freaking hot. I’m hungry!

  • Name 3 drinks you regularly drink.

Coffee, water and now I’m drinking milk at night because I need calcium on my system 😉

  • Current worry.

I’m going to be 10 days without my niece and just thinking about it is already painful :S

  • Current hate right now.

This stupid heat!! Seriously, it’s (and I kid you not) 33ºC today in Lisbon… WHAT?!

  • Dum Da Dum Dummmm what is that?

Hum… Vikings preparing for war?

  • How did you bring in the new year?

That was six/seven months ago but I spent it with my family preparing dinner and playing with my niece and my sister’s cats. Then we talked and waited for midnight and then went to bed. We are not the sort of people to go partying on New Year’s Eve… we prefer to stay home and enjoy the company of each other.

  • Where would you like to go?

Right now… to the beach!!! But I would love to go to the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and the Smithsonian.

  • Name three people who will complete this.

I prefer not to! If people want to do it, they are welcomed to 😉

  • Do you own slippers?

Yep, wearing them right now! Okay, maybe I’m wearing flip-flops right now but I do have slippers 😀

  • What colour shirt are you wearing right now?

A long and loose white shirt with the stamping of a girl on it! It was my sister’s and she gave it to me 🙂

  • Do you like sleeping on satin sheets?

I never slept on those before but I can tell it’s pretty uncomfortable. At least that’s what my mum says :S

  • Can you whistle?

Yes but poorly!

  • Favourite colour.

Blue though I also like purple!

  • Would you be a pirate?

Well YES!! Even though I haven’t watched that many pirates movies or read that many pirates books, I love pirates! So, yeah… I would totally be a kick-ass pirate like Geena Davis on Cutthroat Island 🙂

  • What songs do you sing in the shower?

I don’t sing in the shower… I recite the prologue of Beauty and the Beast and The Lord of the Rings while showering 😉

  • What’s in your right pocket right now?

I’m wearing a skirt so I don’t have pockets today!

  • Last thing that made you laugh.

My niece as always!!

  • Best bed sheets as a child.

You know, I never cared much for that and still don’t. As long as my bed sheets are comfortable and fit my bed, I’m good to go 🙂

  • Worst injury you had as a child.

Well, at three I broke my left leg. At five I had a tumour and at eight I broke my right wrist 🙂

  • Do you love where you live?

Yes I do! Lisbon is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and even though I love Paris and other cities, I always miss my city and its hills, history, activity, everything!

  • How many dogs do you have?

None! My mum suffered a lot when her dog died when she was younger and she never wanted us to go through the same experience. However, now that my sister has two cats, I can already feel my heart breaking when one day they are gone 😦

  • Does someone have a crush on you?

That I’m aware no!

  • What is your favourite candy?

I love chocolate which isn’t exactly a surprise; gummy bears and another type of candy I don’t know the name but it’s like ribbon candy but with sugar! And now I want candy!!

  • Favourite sport team.

The Portuguese football team? Okay, I don’t really care much for sports but when Portugal is playing in any football sort of cup, I always root for them. WE ARE THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS!!!

. . .

And that’s it! I hope you guys enjoyed it and had fun with this tag. And if you want to do it, you can say I tagged you and leave a link for me to check out your answers 😉

“Until the very end.”

Two years ago I posted the reason why Harry Potter was important to me – you can read it here. And today (21st July, 2016), Deathly Hallows turns nine years and I still am, and will ALWAYS be a proud Harry Potter fan no matter what.

Happy Anniversary!

Instagram = Bookstagram

In case some of you might not know about this, I try to Bookstagram a little once in a while. I’m not a professional when it comes to photos (even though I do have a pseudo-degree in photography), but sometimes I like to try to take a creative photo of my books and share them on Instagram.

Here are a few of my favourites:

BOOKSTA BOOKSTAG gemina IMG_20160609_225413

I normally take my photos with my phone (it does take some good quality pics). I have a pretty good editing app that allows me to do all sort of edits required to make a decent photo (light, saturation, shadows, blurring, etc…). But sometimes I take them with my camera because of the lighting, the background – even needing my phone to appear in the photo makes it necessary.

I follow a lot of Bookstagramers and normally drew inspiration from them and their pics. They have amazing photos and I know I won’t be as spectacular as them but I do try. Maybe, with practice I can be as good as them!

I also publish a lot of non-book-relate stuff! I could always create a specific Bookstagram account dedicated only to books but it wouldn’t be the same. My life and my books are the same.

So, if you wish to follow me, you can click on the pathetic new logo (yes, I find the new logo and new layout pathetic though I am now accustomed to it). If you want me to follow you, leave a comment with your username and I’ll check it out 😉

Lello’s Bookstore

This last weekend – from March 11th to 13th – I went to Porto with my friends for a mini-vacations out of Lisbon and all the nervousness surrounding me. We’ve been trying to plan this for years now and back in January we finally decided to go ahead with this. It was one of the best weekends in my life and I had the best of times in the North and in one of the most beautiful cities in my country. If you ever plan to come to Portugal, I recommend you to visit Porto (after Lisbon, of course hehe xD).

I am not going into details about my time there but I will take a few minutes to describe one of the most beautiful and most wonderful experiences in my life. Of course that if you follow me on Instagram you will know what’s coming up next. If you don’t, well, you will know now.

In case you didn’t know, Porto is the city where J.K. Rowling lived when she was married to a Portuguese journalist and teached English as a foreign language. Let’s not dwell on that because we also know just how miserable her life was with her husband… moving on.

It is said that she used to visit this bookstore called Lello. Actually, it is said that the Hogwarts’ staircase was inspired in this bookstore. Finding pictures online of that place, you can definitely see the influence.

Of course that when we decided to to go to Porto, my initial resolution was “I have to go to Lello’s Bookstore”. And, as you can imagine, I did go to the bookstore and it was simply a breathtaking experience.

Let’s begin by saying that as soon as you enter that bookstore, you are transported into a whole new world. It is indeed one of the most beautiful book-stores I’ve ever been to. And those stairs… Merlin’s Beard… those stairs!!

The whole bookstore feels like Hogwarts. The wooden pannels, the ceiling, the lamp posts (yes, even the lamp posts) and, repeating myself, the freaking stairs! I could barely take pictures since I was having a lump in my throat and having, what a friend of mine called, a nerdgasm!

I’m sharing with you a small video I recorded there (sorry it’s from Twitter but I can’t upload video to the blog – bummer!). My phone camera wasn’t focusing so I have very few pictures of the bookstore and I’m still waiting for my friend’s pictures he took of me inside the store. I have a few nice ones on those amazing stairs.

(I’m actually saying “Oh My God!”)

However, knowing the story of the bookstore, I was slightly disappointed with the lack of Harry Potter themed items. I guess I was expecting like a huge wall dedicated solemnly to Harry Potter books and merchandise. You know, since the bookstore is known exactly for that. Instead they had only a small corner with the books in both Portuguese and English and that was it. I was hoping to buy some merchandise there but ended up not buying anything HP-related.

Oh well… at least I bought something there because I had told myself I would buy a book there. Any book… I just wanted a souvenir from Lello.

After browsing the store with my friend Gerson – he was the one who went to the store with me and witnessed my nerdgasm and my HP emotional rollercoaster – I lied eyes on a book that made me gasp and pretty much squeal within the store. A hardcover edition of my favourite classic/book. I couldn’t leave Lello without it.

One thing I forgot to mention before was the fact that you have to pay 3€ to enter the store. But… wait a wait before you guys start saying that’s unfair and such (it isn’t if you think thank people used to go to the bookstore because of HP and left without buying anything): you can use that money inside the store as a discount for any item.

So, continuing with my story!

I told Gerson I was going to use my ticket and buy that book. I didn’t care! I wanted it and I would not leave the bookstore without it!

When I went to pay for the book, the guy at the cashier told us that I could use Gerson’s ticket and get a 6€ discount on my book. Since Gerson wasn’t going to buy anything for himself, he gave me his ticket. 6€ discount for a book (and a postcard and a bookmark for my mum), that’s pretty neat!

So, you must be wondering “What did you buy?”. Well, my friends, take a look at my new and gorgeous edition of Jane Eyre:

It’s so beautiful, such like the bookstore. I left Lello with a gleam in my eyes and a wonderful experience that I will never forget. And Jane Eyre is now part of it.

Lello is definitely a place for you guys to visit when in Porto. And if you’re a Potterhead, you’ll get all the feels when entering it. Because, seriously, knowing the story behind it, you can’t help but noticing small details that makes us so emotional, as if we are watching HP taking shape before our eyes. It isn’t Hogwarts, but it felt close to it, as if I could open an door in the bookstore and enter the wizardry world that the Queen created.

I will never, but never, forget this experience!

The Tag of Randomocity

It has been too long since I posted anything in this blog. And I’m super late with this tag that Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff tagged me. I was supposed to have published this two/three months ago. But, as I mentioned on my previous update, life has been kind of difficult for me at the moment. But here it is, late but here!

Thank you so much for tagging me Michelle. And if you haven’t been on her blog, what the heck are you waiting for? Just click on the button and check it out 🙂

The rules:

  • Paste the button onto your blog post.
  • Leave a new list of questions (or just pass on the question list you answered) and tag a few people of your random choice (and say why you tagged them, if you have time)! (Be original and nonsensical and disastrously random!)
  • Write down three facts about you – one of them is WRONG. Let your commenters guess in the comments which one is wrong (and tell them in the comments after a while)
  • Answer the questions of the person who tagged you – make it all super random and interesting.

Let’s begin with 3 facts about me – one of them is totally wrong remember:

  1. One of my favourite singers is Adele;
  2. I collect any type of cards;
  3. My favourite is food Chinese;

These aren’t that difficult. If you’ve been following me in any social network, then you’ll know which one is false 😉

And now, the questions:

  • What is one food that you can eat mountains of because you love it so?

Spaghetti bolognese! Trust me, I could eat it for the rest of my life and never get tired of it 🙂

  • If you were a Traveler Without Roots, would your home be a train car, an RV, a hot air balloon, a boat, or just a pack on your back? Or maybe another option completely?

A trailer! Can you imagine having a trailer where you could drive anywhere and then a place to sleep at night without having to waste money on motels and stuff? I’ve heard it’s one of the best ways to travel 😛

  • Name a celebrity you wish you could spend one day with.

Just one?! And we could do anything… absolutely anything… with that celebrity?!

Tom Hiddleston!
(I love hearing this man talk in metaphors! I could listen to him all day without getting tired…)

or Michael Fassbender!
(Well, everyone knows I have a gigantic crush on this man… and his Irish accent is so freaking sexy!)

or the new addiction to my endless list of crushes: Oscar Isaac!
(Imagine spending the day discussing Star Wars with Poe Dameron himself! By the way: STORMPILOT FTW!!!)

  • What fictional character’s house would you like to have as your own?

Can I say Hogwarts?! And, sorry Michelle for stealing your idea, perhaps the Beast’s castle because of that freaking beautiful library! Really, that library is life GOALS!

  • If you could take a class in ANYTHING what would it be?

Magic of course! Any type of magic! Just a magical class where I could learn how to cast spells and make potions and all that jazz:)

  • Name a childhood obsession. TV show, stuffed animal, book, food, pastime—anything.

You’re never too old to love Disney so…. Disney was/is/will be my eternal obsession!

  • What do you think would be an awesome theme for a party?

I think every single thing that comes to my mind has been a party theme… From Harry Potter to Doctor Who to Start Wars even to Disney… Ideas anyone?!

  • Have you been in any clubs/groups in your lifetime?

I was part of the Volleyball team during my 6-7 grade! Does that count?

  • What’s something you have to buy all the time that you wish you could just have an endless supply of (something that’s always the same thing—no books or movies!)?

No books or movies?! That’s not fair!! Nutella then… Or coffee! Both then… I can’t live without those two things 🙂

  • What park (national/amusement/theme/etc) would you choose to visit?

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and all the Disneylands… plus the upcoming StarWars theme park (LET ME GEEK OUT!!!). And if there’s ever going to be a Doctor Who one, that one as well 🙂

My questions:

Jesus!! I can’t come up with any questions really… I’m slightly dry when it comes to inspiration. Yeah, I’ll stick with these questions 🙂

Who I Tag:

Pretty much anyone who wants to do this tag but didn’t have anyone tagging them. Just say I tagged you 😉

The NaNoWriMo Tag

Another tag that I wasn’t tagged by anyone but I’ve seen some people do it on BookTube and thought it would be nice to share it alongside some updates concerning NaNoWriMo.

For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and it occurs every single November where you try to write 50,000 words for your novel. For more information, you can go to the official website here.

Okay, let’s do this:

1. How many times have you done NaNo?

Officially, this is my third year participating. Unofficially, four times. The first time everything was relativity new to me so I simply wrote a few chapters without real dedication.

2. How did you first find out about NaNo?

Honestly, I don’t remember. I think it was through YouTube but I can’t really tell you. I’ve heard about it, did a few research and found out what it was about.

3. What was the name of the first novel you attempted with NaNo?

The official first one, Kindred Blood. The unofficial first try was my on-going story Deephaven.

4. Give us a sentence summary of what you’re writing this year?

Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Throne of Glass meets Snow White and the Huntsman!

5. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?

Don’t give up even when you think what you’re writing sucks. What matters is telling your story and what you love and not writing for the masses! Write from the heart and let the words flow 😉

6. Did you ever take a year off from NaNo? Why?

Since I first started back in 2012, I have participated every single year whether I managed to write or not. I might take a year off to sort out some ideas so the next year I can really kick some butt with NaNo. But I do like the challenge so it’s something to consider.

We never know what might happen in the upcoming years, right? So I might need to take a year off but, for now, I’m definitely not thinking about it.

7. What’s your biggest inspiration when figuring out what to write?

Books, music and movies/series.

8. Read the first sentence from one of your novels.

I might as well share with you the first sentence from the novel I’m currently working on (it doesn’t have a title yet… still thinking about it!)

“Arkney is calm as always. The only sound is the wind rustling the leaves on the trees. Not much is occurring in this autumnal dawn apart from my constant inner struggle in dealing with the past.”

There, three sentences because the first was way too short 🙂

9. Why do you love writing?

I love creating characters and situations and worlds. And it’s a refuge from reality. But mainly because these stories want to come out from my brain!

NaNo Update!

This year I managed to write more than what I had expected. So far I wrote 21, 204 words which is more than I did the previous years. I won’t be able to conclude the novel this month though but I’m hoping to continue writing it in the upcoming months.

I admit that I had a writer’s block for a few days. I wrote a chapter and then I got stuck! I couldn’t decide what to do next since everything I had planned went down the drain because I totally changed my story’s course. So I put it aside for a while to see if I could decide where to go from there. After posting this I’ll try to write at least 2,000/3,000 words. I hope to reach 25K till the end of the month so I really need to find out what to do now.

How about you? How’s your NaNoWriMo going this year if you’re entering?!

O Fantástico Blog dos Livros

This is a bit of a publicity post so, please, bear with me.

Carla and Marina, two friends of mine, decided to create a brand new book blog.

They had a book blog before but decided to delete it since they had started using it as a mandatory job instead of a hobby. And when something you love becomes something you have to force yourself into, things normally don’t end well.

Their previous blog was called ‘O Livro Que Deu Um Pum’.

However, they now decided to create a brand new one and start afresh, and I couldn’t be more excited and happy for them. They’ll be sharing not only book-related stuff but also movies, music and TV-series.

It’s a Portuguese blog but I couldn’t help but spread the word about it. The name of the blog, translated to English, is ‘The Fantastic Blog of Books’ and it was inspired by the wonderful short-movie called ‘The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore’ (a short I highly recommend every book lover to watch).

So, without further ado, I give you:

Presenting: Deephaven by Ner

Hello everyone!

Today I’m presenting you something that I have been slowly thinking about hence having created an Wattpad account (see post here).

One of the reasons I created it was to have a motivation when it comes to writing. It’s different when you have people (im)patiently waiting to read more of your stories and, in a way, helping you with their own theories. I end up writing a lot of brainstorms, scenes and situations with no actual story to it and never develop them. With my Wattpad profile I’m hoping to be able to focus on one or two particular stories, developing and writing them instead of vomiting new ideas without background.

And one of the stories I’ve decided to pick up and do exactly that was one of my old ideas based on Imaginaerum by Nightwish (a movie I highly recommend you all to watch!). So, what I said about a poll where you could vote for the story you wanted me to develop just went down the drain.

Deephaven is a story about family ties, dreams and memories with a magical twist. On my original idea, magic wasn’t part of the plot. Instead I had thought about something more contemporary with no actual magic. However, as I thought more about this story the more I came to realise that Deephaven needed magic… Or better, I needed magic! I needed magic in the story if I were to be content with it. What can I do, I’m a fantasy person!

With no further ado, I give you Deephaven:

When Sharon Meyer receives a phone call during the night about her grandfather’s health, she leaves immediately to stand by the only family she has left.

Deephaven looks like a nice little village but its secrets are darker than what she expects. And she is soon thrown into a world of magic and romance where only one side can win.

I know that the plot doesn’t tell you much about the story but I’m slowly writing and planning it. I don’t really have like a hardcore plan for this… I write as it goes!

I will try to post new chapter once or twice a week, it will depend on how much I managed to write and edit, and will let you know by updating the widget on the sidebar. Therefore you can keep an eye out for new chapters.

Of course that it would also mean the world to me if you followed me on Wattpad. That way you would be the first one to know when a new chapter was on.

I hope to continue writing this story since it’s something I’ve been wanting to explore for a little while now. And, of course, any ideas you might have are also welcome.

Special Showcase (Hydra!)

(aka HYDRA!!!)

I know, I know… this has absolutely nothing to do with books. And I apologise in advance for it but, as a great fan of this band, I needed to show you this beauty! Wait… this Beast!

Within Temptation’s latest album, Hydra, came out on January 31st but I could only get my hand on a physical copy Monday because my music store has the stupidest CD launch policy EVER!

I’m not dwelling on that anymore but if that ever happens to me again, I’ll never buy an album there again!

Moving on…

The album is heavier and more Rock than Symphonic Gothic/Metal like WT’s previous works. I enjoyed the fact that they tried to return to their heavier roots but at the same time expanding their boundaries.

And, can I fangirl because of this:

For those who don’t know what’s going on here, that’s Tarja Turunen!!! Seriously, I’ve been waiting for this duet for ten years.

Okay, I’m good!

Here’s Hydra’s track list:

1. Let Us Burn
2. Dangerous (feat. Howard Jones)
3. And We Run (feat. Xzibit)
4. Paradise (What About Us?) (feat. Tarja Turunen)
5. Edge of the World
6. Silver Moonlight
7. Covered By Roses
8. Dog Days
9. Tell Me Why
10. Whole World is Watching (feat. Dave Pirner)
11. Radioactive (Imagine Dragons cover – BONUS TRACK)
12. Summertime Sadness (Lana del Rey cover – BONUS TRACK)
13. Let Her Go (Passenger cover – BONUS TRACK)
14. Dirty Dancer (Enrique Iglesias cover – BONUS TRACK)
15. And We Run (evolution track)
16. Silver Moonlight (evolution track)
17. Covered By Roses (evolution track)
18. Tell Me Why (evolution track)

My favourite song is hard to choose but Edge of the World is running to the podium alongside Tell Me Why and And We Run. Hard task here people… hard task!

As for And We Run, I was extremely scared of that song because of Xzibit. For those who don’t know who he is, he’s a rapper.

Yap, a rapper!

So, you can picture my shock when I found out that my favourite band was recording a song with a rapper… I thought “Oh dear God, what are they thinking?”. Being honest, is one of the best tracks in the album and the rap part fits the melody of the song rather well… I highly recommend it!

And the guitars in this album (plus, the whole instrumental version of Hydra) is pure ecstacy for Ruud’s fans!!!

Let’s check out the package because, to my surprise, the edition I bought brought a special “book” with pictures of the band – it’s around 80 pages. I freaked out in the middle of the store but, luckily, no-one was watching 😉

And, can we talk about this?!?!? The red square on the photo below… just look at it and tell me that’s not me dreaming, okay?

Within Temptation favourited my tweet!!! That’s WT’s official twitter…. and they favourited my tweet!!!

They’ve acknowledged my existence even if just for a minute!!

I have a small review of the album on my The Majestic Tale of a Clumsy Girl With a Dream. Feel free to check it out 😉

Christmas Goodies

Ho Ho Ho…Happy Christmas everyone!!!

How was your Christmas everyone?! I hope you guys have received some amazing presents under the tree and have eaten a lot of chocolate and pantries 😀

My Christmas was slightly different from other years. First, my niece was born on December 20th which pretty much messed up with our schedule. Second, my mum and I decided not to make out tree this year due to the fact that we spent the week before Christmas visiting and helping my sister on the Hospital before the baby was born… we barely had time for ourselves.

Therefore our Christmas was, let’s say, cancelled. On December 24th my sister and niece came home from the Hospital so you can imagine how our mood was on that day… sleepy!!

And on Christmas Day I’ve decided to procrastinate and spent the entire day watching movies: Edward Scissorhands and The Lord of the Rings (only got as far as The Two Towers but, oh boy, didn’t I missed the movies!)

However, I got some goodies on Christmas Eve that I was so not expecting and those small things made this Christmas worth it despite all.

So, let’s check out the two (yah, I only got two presents this year… but I also got some money though) presents I got:

My sister/twin/niece got me this figurine on a fair. I absolutely LOVE IT!!! It has everything to do with the blog and it’s from now on, the blog mascot (need to find a name for the figurine though… I give names to everything!!!!).

And my best-friend/partner-in-crime Inês got me (and I still cannot believe this) the entire HP saga in English, something I’ve been DYING to get ever since I started reading HP. The books are used, they don’t match and I couldn’t care less about those details…. those are all HP books in freaking English.

I surely don’t deserve her as a friend ’cause I didn’t gave her anything this year and I feel terrible about that.

I might use some of the money I got to get myself some books, some clothes, well, pretty much the things we buy with Christmas money. And if I happen to buy books, I’ll let you know by creating a special Showcase Sunday dedicated to Christmas presents I bought myself 😉

A to Z Bookish Survey

AZ Survey

This survey is from The Perpetual Page Turner.

I’ve seen this survey on every blog I follow (or almost) and I feel like an outsider for not doing it 😦 This seemed like a fun thing to do so I decided to do it and share it with you guys.

Author you’ve read the most books from:

Juliet Marillier, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Dan Brown and J.K. Rowling (of course). I think I’ve read more than three books from these authors.

Best Sequel Ever:

I hate these questions!!! I have no idea… for me every sequel is amazing because it exists. But if I truly have to choose one… Okay, forget it. I can’t answer this one :S

Currently Reading:

I’m currently reading two books, one in Portuguese (lent by my aunt) and one in English for a Blog Tour.

The Portuguese one is I Am Legend by Richard Matheson and so far it has been an enjoyable reading though different from the movie.

The English one is Night of the Purple Moon by Scott Cramer, the first book of The Toucan Trilogy. So far I have way too many questions but, then again, I’m only in the beginning so I believe some questions will be answered 🙂

Drink of Choice while Reading:

Water, coffee and chocolate milk (cold or hot… it depends on the weather).

E-Reader of Physical Book?

I love my Bobby Socks but I LOVE a physical book even more. I can have thousands of ebooks on my Kobo but it feels like I don’t really own them. Whilst with a physical one, it feels real to the touch, it feels mine, mine own… if you know what I mean?

Fiction Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated in High School:

Ethan from The Caster Chronicles probably… or maybe Cal from Hex Hall 😉

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

The Mad Scientists’ Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke. Though I had a feeling I was going to enjoy it, I never thought this book would have such a deep meaning to me. I still need to buy it on Paperback though :/

Hidden Gem Book:

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff… I know this author and this book are a bit famous around the YA community but I still think this book should have more readers.

Important Moment in Your Reading Life:

Creating my Goodreads account and my book blog. It introduced me to so many books, authors, I’ve met so many people and blogs… It was the best thing I ever did in my life.

Just Finished:

My Sister’s Reaper by Dorothy Dreyer. I really enjoyed it and I hope there’ll be more. My review will be up on October 11th for a Blog Tour eheh xD

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

Erotic (even though I’ve read Fifty Shades); Biographies (have to read some for University and I don’t particularly like it); self-help books… you can get the picture.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

Brisingr (Inheritance Cycle #3) by Christopher Paolini and only because I couldn’t finish Inheritance. The Portuguese edition of the book has around 813 pages so… yeah!

Major Book Hangover Because of:

I normally have a lot of hangovers when I finish a book. I had one with Harry Potter, I always have one when I finish a book my Juliet Marillier; had one with Delirium by Lauren Oliver, Insurgent by Veronica Roth, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi, The Mad Scientist’s Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke… and so on…

Number of Bookcases You Own:

I have one bookcase with three and half shelves (and a half because the last one has a few books only) and three more shelves on the wall.

One Book You Have Read Multiple of Times:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling 😉

Preferred Place to Read:

Bed! I like to feel comfortable when I read 😀

Quote that Inspires You/Gives You All The Feels From A Book You’ve Read:

“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”Dracula, Bram Stoker and don’t ask me why. I always get goose-bumps when I read this.

Reading Regrets:

Only finding my passion for books when I was 14 years-old. I wish I could have memories of favourite books when I was a child but unfortunately I don’t have that many apart from a few and those are mostly my sister’s influence.

Series You Started And Need To Finish (All Books Are Out In Series):

Delirium by Lauren Oliver; Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead; The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl; Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick; Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins… and the worst of all, Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini…. I’m pathetic!!!

Three Of Your All-Time Favourite Books:

Tricky one!!! I have a LOT of books that are my favourites… Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier; The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowing.

Unapologetic Fangirl Of:

Juliet Marillier; Harry Potter (and consequently J.K. Rowling) and Divergent 🙂

Oh, and even though it’s not a book, it has some books… Doctor Who!!!

Very Excited For This Release More Than All Others:

Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth…. I swear to you that I’m freaking out without this book!!!!

Worst Bookish Habit:

Book shopping (it’s bad and good…)!!! Smelling books! You pick 😛

X Marks The Spot: Start At The Top Left of Your Shelf And Pick the 27th Book:

The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey Series #2) by Julie Kagawa.

Your Latest Book Purchase:

I’m so poor and broke that my last purchase was The Flame of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier back in July 😦

Zzz-snatcher Book (Last Book That Kept You Up WAY Late):

These Broken Starts (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner… it was 6 am when I finished it and I could barely sleep afterwards. But it was SO WORTH IT!!!

Yay! This was so cool to do… if you haven’t done it yet, go ahead and do it. Feel free to leave me a link so I can check out your answers 😉

Hope you guys have enjoyed this ^_^

A Hora Secreta (Midnighters #1) – Scott Westerfield

O Mago (Antigo Egipto #3) – Wilbur Smith

A minha fofinha Carla @O Livro Que Deu Um Pum “taggou-me” (esta palavra existe?) neste Tag e eu agradeço-lhe imenso *virtual hug* eheh xD

???????????????????????????????Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy #1) – Richelle Mead

Este até foi relativamente fácil porque assim que olhei para a estante, ele sobressaiu-se.

DSC00978The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Stephen Chbosky

Tinha outro livro começado com P (que podem ver na foto lá ao fundo) mas preferi mostrar este porque este livro é um espectáculo. Mais, ainda não li o outro logo, achei que era justo mostrar o Perks :S

DSC00979Geist (Book of the Order #1) – Philippa Ballantine

DSC00980Living Dead in Dallas (Sookie Stackhouse #2) – Charlaine Harris

*I regret nothing*

As vossas letras serão… *drum roll*… H S B F M!!!

Hello people *waves hand*

As I think you have noticed, Inês has been a massive help here on the blog with her reviews. Though she writes them in Portuguese, her reviews have helped me keep the blog active and she even inspired me when I didn’t had any sort of inspiration towards the blog.

However, I haven’t had time to translate her reviews from Portuguese to English as I had planned when I asked her to help me. But, since I’m on vacations and have time to do, I will try to translate her reviews to English and add a link to it on her original review (or even add it to her PT one – still planning on how to do it).

I will only translate the books I know have English editions or are English. There are several books she has read from other languages that were translated to Portuguese that don’t have an English edition. I think there’s no point in translating books that haven’t come out in English. Maybe one day, when those books are published in English, I will translate her reviews.

I might not start the translation from her very first review. Instead, I might pick up the books I know my readers are familiar with – like City of Bones which was her latest review – and so on.

If in the meantime you have a special request to do – if you wish me to translate a certain review she has written first – leave a comment bellow and I’ll translate it. I will begin the translation of City of Bones straight away, as soon as I publish this, and I hope to post it really soon ^_^

Also, I’m not a professional translator – that’s Carla 😉 – so there might be some errors on my translations. If you spot any (especially the Portuguese readers), let me know so I can change it.
