Bout of Books 17 {Wrap-Up = Total Fail}

Bout of Books

Participant 228~ Ner @A Cup of Coffee & a Book

Okay, I should’ve posted this before but, to be fair and honest with you all, I kind of forgot! And, as you can definitely see from my updates and progress, this Bout of Books was a total fail for me! Why? Well, because I spent two days running errands and then I was lazy because I was so tired – and also had a few University stuff to gather before unrolling! Not to mention that I lost all my progress because I decided to reset my phone – I had all my reading progress on my memos – and it kind of unmotivated me.

Also, The Bone Witch is such a complex book I need to pay close attention to it in order to fully understand it so, whenever I picked up the book I was so tired I barely managed to read more than 10 pages a day!

So you could say that this is just a small wrap-up to let you know that I’m a failure!

I actually thought this read-a-thon was going to go smooth but it ended up the contrary! Only the first day was an achievement but it all went down-hill from there! Oh well… maybe next time!!

In the meantime, here’s the books I read:

BoutofBooksWrapUpTotalFail

So, I finished Labyrinth Lost which I really liked. Wasn’t expecting it enjoy it as much as I did! And then I started The Bone Witch and even though I’m really enjoying it, it’s a little but more complex than I initially thought. I’m pretty sure I was around 45% done Sunday but since I lost all my progress, I can’t be certain! And I must have read around 300 and something pages total!

Overall, I’m not happy with this Bout of Books since I am the one to blame for my total failure. Hopefully next time it will be better but this one sucked great time for me!

I hope all of you who participated had a blast and read everything (or close to it) you had challenged yourselves to read. Also, don’t reset your phone during a read-a-thon if you’re writing down your progress there – I normally write it down on a separate piece of paper but this time I was stupid to trust my phone alone… never again!

Bout of Books 17 {Day 2/3/4}

Bout of Books

Participant 228~ Ner @A Cup of Coffee & a Book

Hello everyone and I’m so so sorry for my lack of updates in these last two days but I was running some errands and pretty much didn’t have time to come to the computer. But today I’m here and I’m going to update you on my (slow) progress and post all the challenges I’ve missed so, please, bear with me 😉

Day 2: Tuesday – 23/08

Progress:

Reading: Labyrinth Lost – 100% done – page 327  (PDF), 315 (book) | The Bone Witch – 6% done – page 28 (PDF);
Pages Read: 62 pages;
Books Read: 1/4;
Total Pages Read: 176 pages;

Tuesday was a pretty slow day since I had a lot of things to do and barely had time to sit down and read. And when I got home I was so tired I read around 16 pages and fell asleep!! My feeling of accomplishment went downhill from here :S

Challenge:

The Nickster hosted at Bout of Books – Mix ‘n Match

Instructions: Pick out 10-15 books from your shelf, from your local library, or from a local bookstore. They can be any genre, any language, and any length. In each book, flip to a random page and pick the 1st word (articles such as “the”, “and”, “an”, “or”, etc. don’t count as the 1st word). Use all these 1st words to try to create an actual sentence. If the books are in different languages, feel free to translate them to all one language or leave them as they are! also, you can add in some articles, such as “the”, “and”, “an”, “or”, etc., if you want to make the sentence flow better.

I had a hard time with this challenge since all the words I got barely managed to create a proper sentence. So I took a little bit of liberty and instead of one sentence, I ended up with three that don’t make any sense.

So, here are the books and the words I got:

20160825_165054

  • him;
  • staring;
  • freeze;
  • into;
  • oldest;
  • sound;
  • even;
  • long;
  • resemble;
  • learning;

And here is the sentences I came up with:

“The oldest sister was staring into his eyes and they resemble(d) the past long forgotten. She felt herself freeze as the sound of his heartbeat was close to her. She was learning how to control her even breathing but failing at that since she was in love with him.”

See, how pathetic does this sounds? And it doesn’t make any sense at all! But it was the best I could come up with since I’m not that inspired today 😦

Day 3: Wednesday – 24/08

Progress:

Reading: The Bone Witch – 20% done – page 87 (PDF);
Pages Read: 59 pages;
Books Read: 1/4;
Total Pages Read: 235 pages;

If Tuesday was a slow day for me, what can I say about Wednesday! I think you can gather just how bad it was but I have to be honest, I simply couldn’t read because I was so tired my eyes actually hurt and I didn’t want to force them.

Challenge:

Show Off Your Shelves Photo Challenge – Bout of Books

Wednesday’s challenge was to show-off my bookshelves so it was an easy one to do! So, here are my bookshelves:

20160825_165405

20160825_165427

I’m missing a few books in these last shelves that are on my mum’s room!! Also, I’m sorry how blurry the pictures are. They looked fine when I took them and only when I uploaded them did I realised they looked horrible :S

Day 4: Thursday- 25/08

Progress:

Reading: The Bone Witch – 20% done – page 87 (PDF);
Pages Read: 0 pages;
Books Read: 1/4;
Total Pages Read: 235 pages;

Can you believe I haven’t read anything today?! I’m hoping I’ll be able to catch after posting this but so far zero, niente, rien!

Challenge:

Titles in the Tabloids – The Book Junkie

Instructions:

  • Think about the book you are reading or one that you finished during Bout of Books 17;
  • Create a “tabloid” type headline.  Make it fun, feel free to use sarcasm liberally;

Okay, I’m going to use Labyrinth Lost for this tabloid. Here we go:

“Hormonal teenager sends her family to limbo and blames her dead pet.”

Wow, doesn’t sound at all like the story but this was as close as I could get to a fun title without giving too much away from the story!

Bout of Books 17 {Day 1}

Bout of Books

Participant 228~ Ner @A Cup of Coffee & a Book

Hello everyone and welcome to Day 1 of Bout of Books 17!!!

Day 1: Monday – 22/08

Progress:

Reading: Labyrinth Lost – 82% done – page 281 (PDF), 269 (book);
Pages Read: 114 pages;
Books Read: 0/4;
Total Pages Read: 114 pages;

Started counting as soon as it was midnight (it was around 1am actually) and I’ve got to admit I’m feeling pretty accomplished.

And I also have to say that tomorrow (day 2) and Wednesday (day 3) might be a little bit slow since I have to run some errands and might not be able to read that much. But I’m determined to finish Labyrinth Lost today and start The Bone Witch so there’s that 😉

Challenge:

Book to Movie Adaptation – Writing My Own Fairy Tale

So, I said I wasn’t sure if I was going to participate in any challenge this time but today’s challenge is so easy I just had to do it.

In this challenge you have to share your favourite and least favourite book-to-movie adaptation. You can share the reasons why or simply leave the names here. Pretty easy, right? So, here we go:

Favourite book-to-movie adaptation:

Stardust (Neil Gaiman) | Stardust (Matthew Vaughn – 2007)

Stardust

I might be cheating on this one since I first saw the movie and then read the book but it’s one of my ultimate favourite fantasy books and movies. They’re different, that’s so sure; there are things in the book that don’t appear in the movie and vice-versa. But I think Matthew Vaughn managed to transport into the big screen the wonderful story that Neil Gaiman created, remaining faithful to the source material, but also adding a few new things to make it even more interesting (yes, Captain Shakespeare for instance). In a whole, I think book and movie complete each other 🙂

Least favourite/most hated book-to-movie adaptation:

Beautiful Creatures (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl) | Beautiful Creatures (Richard LaGravenese 2013)

Beautiful Creatures

Oh man!! You guys have no idea how hyped I was for this movie. It movie had the perfect cast (Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson AND Viola Davis… really, simply perfect!) and I really loved the book so it had an amazing story to be a perfect movie! But they had to ruin everything! And when I say everything… I mean it! They changed the whole plot, there were things that didn’t make any sense and the ending… the ending!!! I left the cinema so upset, angry and sad… Why do they have this urge to pick up a book and change the whole story? It reminded me that time I went to see Eragon and left the cinema wanting to punch the director!

Even though Stardust is different from the book, the main plot, the main characters, the essence of the Neil Gaiman’s amazing book is there. As for Beautiful Creatures (and Eragon now that I’ve mentioned it), lost everything in their poor executed movie that had everything to be a blockbuster and the next Twilight/Harry Potter.

What about you guys? What is your favourite book-to-movie adaptation? And your least favourite?

Bout of Books 17 {TBR}

Bout of Books

Participant 228~ Ner @A Cup of Coffee & a Book

Happy Sunday everyone!!

Today I’m bringing you my Bout of Books 17 TBR – all the books I’m planning on reading during this next week’s read-a-thon – the read-a-thon kicks-off tomorrow and you still have time to sign-up if you want (just click on the button above :D).

I’ve decided not to try to be too ambitious with my list since I always end up not reading all of the books I challenged myself. So, this time, I picked up only four books; one of them is to actually finish and other is a re-read.

So, let’s see what I have decided to read for this next week:

TBR:

BoutofBooks17TBR

All page numbers are according to Goodreads – they might actually vary with the book itself (since apart from Throne of Glass, they’re all earcs from NetGalley!)! As for Labyrinth Lost, I’m not entirely sure how many pages I have left but on Day 1 progress (tomorrow!) I’ll let you know 😉

I’m still not sure if I’m going to be able to participate in all challenges since I really want to mostly read and not spend all my days updating my progress. But it’ll depend on the challenge and how much I have read. We’ll see how that goes 😉

For everyone participating or not, good luck with your reading ^_^

My first read-a-thon in what feels like AGES!!! Seriously, apart from my own read-a-thon last year, I haven’t signed-up for any and I kind of miss it. And one of the reasons I’ve decided to participate in this one has to do with me being a little bit slow with my reading! I have only read two books total this month and it’s already August 19th!! So, I’ll be using this as a motivation to read even more!

As for my TBR, it’ll come around Sunday once I sort what I want to read during the read-a-thon!

So, who’s participating?

Bout of Books 14 {Wrap-Up}

Bout of Books
Participant 41 ~ Leonor (Ner) @ A Cup of Coffee and a Book

Wrap-Up:

So, Bout of Books 14 ended and I did not finished my goals. Well, I did finished one of the books and started the other one but, overall, I did not read as much as I had planned. I blame my second book. Though I was quite excited to read it, I’m just not connecing with it. Shame, really!

Check out my progress:

Witch Hunter

I finished Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker and I really but really liked it. Definitely one of my favourites from this year.

My review for this one will be up somewhere within the next two weeks and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoy YA fantasy books with witches.

Hunter

I started Hunter by Mercedes Lackey. Damn, my expectations for this one were so high and I feel like I’m tumbling down. So slow, I’m not connecting with Joy (the main character) and I have no idea what’s going on. I’m 31% done and I think I might this one aside. Which is a shame ’cause the premise sounded way too good.

As for the challenges, I’ll leave a list here with the links so you can click and check them out 🙂

How was your Bout of Books this last week? Did you managed to fulfil all your goals?

Progress:

Nevermind my progress… didn’t read that much yesterday and I’m quite ashamed of that :S

Day 7: Sunday 23/08

Sarah Reads Too Much — What to read next?

In this challenge you have to recommend 3 (three) books only that I’ve read this year and that I think people should have on their TBR. I’m quite sure that the books I’ll be picking will already be on your TBR but, still, it doesn’t hurt to recommend books, does it?

TBR Rrc

I highly recommend you all to check these books out. Choosing only 3 felt like a betrayal to all the other books you guys should add to your TBR but these deserve a special place because they were unique in their own way and I think more people should pick them up.

Which books do you recommend me to add to my TBR?And how was your Bout of Books this week?

Day 5: Friday 21/08

Blue Books and Butterflies — Character Soulmates

In this challenge you have to pick-up two characters from different books and pair them together. And I know just the characters I want for this 🙂

QcFMNHfCFhPU

Faolan from The Bridei Chronicles by Juliet Marillier
+
Celaena from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Oh, man… I can totally see these two characters together. They are both assassins, stubborn and hot. Though I think Faolan would totally flip with certain things that Celaena would do and say – especially her admiration for pretty dresses. I totally ship Faolaena hehe xD

Day 6: Saturday 22/08

Steph in Wonderland — Road Trip

“For this challenge, I’d like for you to come up with a list of the top 4-5 states/places you’d love to visit and find a book (you either read or want to read) that takes place in that state/place or a book by an author who lives or is from there.”

Dang!! There are so many places in books I want to go!! Even the AU ones. But, check out the top 4 I created:

  • Hogwarts: Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
    (of course… who wouldn’t LOVE to visit Hogwarts?!)
  • New Zealand: Juliet Marillier
    (the Master is from New Zealand and it’s a place I would love to visit one day. And since I can’t actually choose The Lord of The Rings because they are set in Middle Earth – though the movies were filmed in NZ – I decided to pick up my favourite author :D)
  • Paris: Da Vinci’s Code by Dan Brown
    (I’m cheating in this one because I’ve been to Paris but I don’t really remember much. So I wish to go back there and enjoy it to the fullest!)
  • Scotland: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
    (Though I haven’t finished the book – but I did watched the series (OMG!!!) – I so but so want to go to Scotland! Do I need to rally say whay?)

What about you? What are your character soulmates? And where would you love to go?

Day 4: Thursday 20/08

Kimberly Faye Reads — 4 Seasons Book Covers

‘For this challenge, you need to convey the four seasons in book covers – through color, title, cover, etc. You can be literal or take a more creative approach. Anything goes! Just show me four seasons in book covers.’

This was slightly harder than the other challenges. Coming up with books that matched the four seasons wasn’t easy. Specially Summer… But, I made it and here are the choices (by colour!):

20150820_185056

  • Spring (Green): Graceling;
  • Summer (Red): Crown of Midnight;
  • Autumn (Orange/Lavender): Delirium;
  • Winter (White): The Iron Daughter;

Oh, and there’s Harry, so happy to be reunited with Celaena after two days. He simply adored her the moment he saw her. What can I do? Who can say no to that little face? 🙂

Which books did you picked for your four seasons?

Day 3: Wednesday 19/08

Rocky Top Real Talk — MASH

‘MASH is a fun little game where you write up options for your future and then after getting a number, go through until you have one choice for each category – and have your future right there in front of you!’

I had quite a blast doing this challenge. Check it out (and pardon my horrible spelling :S):

So, apparently I live in Gatlin (from Beautiful Creatures – using a lot of this book in this Bout of Books) with my significant other Perry (from Under the Never Skyswoon!!) with our pet daemon (from Northern Lights) and I work as a wizard (from every single fantasy book featuring wizards and witches – mainly Harry Potter and Witch Hunter).

Sorry, no Harry this time. He’ll be making appearances on challenges concerning showing off my books!

How did your MASH turned out? Let me know your future in the comments 😉

The Book Monsters — Book Scavenger Hunt

In this challenge you have to search for books that follow specific characteristics. Here they are:

1. A Book that begins with “B”  (for Bout of Books!);
2. A book you’re planning to read/currently reading for Bout of Books;
3. Blue Book(s);
4. Books from your favorite genre!;
5. A book on your TBR shelf, or your full TBR shelves;

Now, I will be adding this challenge on Instagram so you can follow me there. However, this will be my official Bout of Books entry post 🙂

20150818_163527

The fact that most of the books are blue was on purpose 😉

Now, I had to separate a book from the list because point number 2, ‘A book you’re planning to read/currently reading for Bout of Books’ is a Kobo book and I totally forgot to add it to the original photo. So, I took a photo of a book I’m planning to read for this read-a-thon:

20150818_163850

Harry is hitting on Celaena! He just couldn’t stop as soon as he saw the beautiful cover of Throne of Glass. Can’t really blame him 🙂

I adore doing this sort of challenges. The fact that I just stand there looking at my shelves and realising I have quite a variety of covers/books is quite amazing.

Which blue books did you chose?

Between Library Shelves — Fictional World Travel

In this challenge you have to pick up 3-6 books set in a country that is not your own. Since I live in Portugal, this was quite of an easy challenge for me. Check out the books/country I decided to chose:

I actually managed to pick up 6 books. And, of course that Harry had to make a cameo… he’s my sidekick 🙂 And I’m super excited about this challenge. As soon as I looked at my bookshelves I immediately knew which books to pick. It was easy!

Did you managed to do this challenge? Which books did you chose?
